Centro Multidisciplinario de Investigaciones Tecnológicas AB From the existence of Sus scrofa in the American continent, it has been a valid source of animal protein alternative to cattle. In Paraguay, the intensification of pig production contributed to the increase in consumption per capita. Parallel to the intensification and industrialization; erosion and degradation of local genotypes were generated with the introduction of specialized breeds; Duroc, Pietrain, Large White, Landrace and Poland, in some cases, even as "improvement" projects promoted by international technical missions in partnership with national institutions, aimed at backyard systems. This exotic pig genetic has great relevance but in systems where the environment can be controlled, although its response in the backyard system has not been optimal. In fact, the genotype-environment interaction in pig production, typifies well (or not) the productive success of livestock ventures, especially in the humid heat of Paraguay. Currently, the Paraguayan Creole pig, locally called “Kure Saite”, is found in free-range systems in some areas of the humid Paraguayan Chaco, in front of two different stages of "desires": breeding/consumption and total extermination. In the first case, due to organoleptic characteristics that make it a desired meat over imported breeds and at a low productive cost. In the second, producers, technicians and locals see it as harmful, as it proliferates quickly and spoils meadows. Its population is in clear decrease, and of the 35 livestock establishments reported, we have only found 11 points of location of these pigs that usually walk in herds. Both situations face an uncertain future.
